Editorial

Odisha Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma (OJOT), 2025 Issue

The 2025 issue of the Odisha Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma (OJOT) arrives during a landmark year for our fraternity. As we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Odisha Orthopaedic Association (OOA), we reflect on fifty years of surgical excellence, mentorship, and the enduring spirit of service that has defined orthopaedics in Odisha since 1975.

Fifty Years of Clinical Legacy

Half a century ago, the OOA began as a vision to unite orthopaedic surgeons across our state. Today, we stand as a robust professional body. While our clinical skills have reached global standards—from complex trauma management to advanced subspecialty care—the documentation of this work remains our next great frontier. This 50th-anniversary issue is not just a celebration of where we have been, but a call to action for where we must go.

Addressing the Academic Challenge

It is no secret that maintaining a steady stream of high-quality, original research is a challenge for regional journals. However, we are currently witnessing a significant shift in our institutional landscape. With a substantial increase in the number of Postgraduates (PGs) and dedicated faculty members across the state, we are sitting on a vast, untapped reservoir of clinical data and intellectual energy.

The editorial board is optimistic that this growth in our academic workforce will lead to a “culture of publication.” We urge our faculty and residents to move beyond simple documentation and embrace rigorous clinical audits and prospective studies. The “Odisha experience” in orthopaedics is unique and valuable; it deserves to be shared with the wider scientific world through the pages of OJOT.

Looking Toward the Next Decade

As we celebrate our Golden Jubilee, our focus must remain on the quality and integrity of our scientific output. We are committed to supporting our young researchers through better mentorship in methodology and writing. By channelling the energy of our expanding academic community, we can ensure that OJOT evolves from a regional record into a highly cited, authoritative journal.

A Shared Responsibility

We thank the authors who have contributed their work to this milestone edition. Your commitment is the lifeblood of this journal. We also extend our gratitude to the pioneers of the OOA whose legacy we honor this year.

Let this 50th-anniversary issue serve as a turning point—a moment where we commit to matching our renowned clinical expertise with equally rigorous academic scholarship

Editorial

As we usher in the new year, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we present the 2024 issue of The Odisha Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma. This edition is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence by our contributors, reviewers, and editorial team. The articles featured in this issue span a wide range of topics, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of orthopaedic practice and research. The founders of our journal intended it to serve as a beacon of knowledge and a platform for the exchange of ideas within the orthopaedic community.
However, the journey has not been without its challenges. One of the primary hurdles we face is the timely submission and review of manuscripts. Delays in these processes can hinder the publication schedule and affect the dissemination of valuable research. Additionally, maintaining the high standards of scientific rigor and ethical integrity in all published works requires constant vigilance and dedication. To overcome these challenges, we call upon the members’ of the Odisha Orthopaedics Association to actively participate in the journal’s activities. By contributing high-quality research, volunteering as peer reviewers, and providing constructive feedback, members can play a pivotal role in enhancing the journal’s impact and reputation. Together, we can ensure that The Odisha Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma remains at the forefront of orthopaedic research and continues to inspire and inform practitioners and researchers alike.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our contributors, reviewers, and readers for their unwavering support. As we look forward to another year of academic excellence, we remain committed to advancing the field of orthopaedics and improving patient care through the dissemination of cutting-edge research. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Warm regards,

From The Editor’s Desk…..

Our editorial team has always endeavoured not just to improve the quality of the manuscripts but also to help the authors improve their writing skills. Depending upon the type of manuscript we recommend standard guidelines like the CONSORT, PRISMA, STROBE, CARE and STARD. We also recommend IMRaD format while writing the manuscript.
The Introduction, which is around 3-4 paragraphs, should be structured from generalities to the specific elaborating what the shortcomings are in published literature and what void the current research would fill. The authors must understand that the “aim” is the broader intent, while the “objectives” are the more specific steps which one plans to achieve.
The Material and Methods section needs to be detailed to such an extent that any researcher planning to replicate the study can do so with accuracy. In this section, the study design, the study setting, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample size, interventions, outcome measures and statistics are elaborated.
The results section provides outcome data about primary and secondary measures as well as the contrast between groups wherever applicable. Avoid presenting same result data in multiple formats as well as interpreting the results in this section.
The discussion part compares the results with existing literature, analyses the strengths and limitations of the study and at the same time explain the practical implications as well as future research directions. Finally, at the end a summary of the concluding findings should be provided and whether they support your initial research hypothesis.
Last but not the least, the author must remember the criticality of the abstract. Most reviewers and editors as well as readers base their initial judgement based on this short paragraph. Structured abstracts are preferred with relevant subsections. Authors must understand the significance of keywords, MeSH terms as well as how to do proper referencing.
Writing medical literature is an art which needs to be groomed at an early stage. Competency develops as one writes more & more. We hope this editorial will help authors understand how to ensure that their article is selected, printed, and finally appreciated by the readers.
We end this editorial with a remembrance to a few of our dearest fellow Orthopaedicians whose demise shall leave a lasting void in Odisha Orthopaedics. Dr Prabhakar Mohanty, Dr Bijay Kumar Sadangi, Dr Binay Aggarwal and Dr Smarajit Pattnaik will always be in our cherished memories.

The first born is always the most loved one. It represents the hope and aspiration for the future. So also, the first volume of the journal of Orissa Orthopaedic Association, which is born today. It represents the long-cherished desire of all of us to start a forum, where the work of the orthopaedic surgeons of the state can be put forth and the topics discussed. Orthopaedic surgery is making great stride all over the world. From replacement to immune response, the problems are numerous, there scope vast. We in Orissa are doing our best and must keep pace with the scientific development in India and abroad. It is said that even if you are in the right track you will get run over if you just seat there.
Accidents, diseases, and deformities which constitute our speciality is an ever-increasing problem of the society. Orthopaedics in Orissa is comparatively new but thanks to the sincerity and ability of the orthopaedic surgeons of the state. It has established itself and commanding respect. Now the time has come when we must look to the future and move forward with new ideas so that the younger surgeons will carry on the tradition that is being created. This journal is one of the steps to lead us in the direction in this context, if we look back to the beginning of that great pioneering journal, the JBJS it will be seen that after the war the pioneer surgeon foresaw the vast explosion of orthopaedic surgery that was certain to occur. They had long been acquainted to communicate by correspondence, but the theatre of war had introduced them to personal confrontation, and they felt the need to communicate more and more. This desire led to the beginning of JBJS first in USA and then in UK.
The future of orthopaedics lies in the development of research and its application. The young surgeons of today must be encouraged to conduct research. They must be guided to pursue new ideas so that the science of Orthopaedics in the state is enriched. This is where the journal has an important role to play. It will provide ample scope to all of us to look at each other’s work. Evaluate and then us all pray to the health and prosperity of this new infant, that is born today.

From The Editor’s Desk

Cataclysmic changes have shaken our world in the last year. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work as well as the way we think. Everybody had to act instantly and spontaneously. Orthopaedic training and practice were massively hit as social distancing norms set in. It was bewildering to think, how orthopaedic education for students especially postgraduates would continue under such circumstances. OJOT in a coordinated manner along with all the MS and DNB training institutes of the state started a PG Webinar series to cater to the intermediate vacuum during shutdown and lockdowns.

On the publishing front, we were already incorporating changes that would help us to continue with the journal in these uncertain times. The changes are gradual but noticeable. OJOT released its first online issue (Volume 41, issue 10) last year. From this year the journal has been converted into a biannual periodical as the number of contributions rises sharply. This issue is the first biannual release after 41 years of journal publication! The journal has gradually started being accepted by abstracting agencies. In the last six months, we received indexing from a few major agencies.

We are gradually planning a subspecialty focus to cater to future requirements. Presently we are hoping for indexing by major MCI recognised agencies. Journal guidelines are being built up to enhance the quality of submissions. The path ahead is tough, but we are confident of achieving the targets that have been put forth with sustained support from the association members.
